Here's a recently finished project. This is my first attempt and mirror work, and I'm pretty happy with how that went. I have lots of ideas for using it in the future. Also, this is my first "free hand" embroidery. Normally I draw a design on the fabric first, but this time I just sort of looked for a picture in the "clouds" of the hand-dyed fabric.

Jättestiligt! :)

How do you do the stitches that hold the mirror? I've always meant to find out, but I never seem to remember to look at the technique when I have fabrics with mirrors on them in front of me.

Tack sa mycket! :)

Here's a quote from Embroidery Techniques From East and West by Munni Srivastava about how to attach shishas. Sorry I can't show you the picture because that's what I used.

There are many different ways of attaching shishas, and each embroiderer will have her favourite way of doing it. The golden rule, however, is to put the thumb firmly over te shisha, holding it in position and not moving the thumb until the base stitches are completed. The first step is to make two vertical stitches, followed by two horrizontal ones, weaving the thread round the verticals. The thread must be drawn firmly, as the holding sticthes will get pulled out towards the edges of the mirror by the top stitching....Bring the needle to the front of the work in the opposite direction from the point of exit. The shisha is now secure and you can decide which stitch to use to embroider round it.

Mirror work is called shisha, although doing a search using 'mirror work' as your key words will pull up the same stuff. I bought my mirrors at a store called Fabric Depot. I imagine a craft store would have them as well. I found them in three different sizes and bout a few of each since I didn't know which would work out best for me.

It's just on a piece of dyed fabric. Currently I am embroidering a blouse though. How did you know? Heheh.
